Celebrity Cruise Line
Celebrity Cruises was born in April, 1988. At that time it was a subsidiary to the Greece based Group i.e. Chandris. This was for the operation of cruise ships to the Bermuda. Since 1960s this group has been involved in the cruise traffics. During the period of late 1980s they started operating in the United States market under the name of the Chandris Fantasy Cruises. These cruise liners are mainly for the low end of the market and their fleet consists of a second hand ocean liners. Celebrity Cruises came into functioning in April 1988 when that time biggest and leading premium cruise lines i.e. Home Lines was sold to the Holland America Line. This liner’s ships hold the two out of five contacts that were offered by the Government of Bermuda to the different cruise lines. Despite of the fact that these contracts are high valued, Holland America Line decided to withdraw its lines from the service. This gives the opportunity to the two new ships to gain the contract of the cruise lines. Chandris Fantasy Cruises also wished to gain these contracts but on the sad point Government of Bermuda was not willing to give these up market lines to this group as this was low market in nature. But in order to gain these contracts Chandris group created Celebrity Cruises. As a result Celebrity Cruises was awarded the most precious contracts for the two ships for the period of five years from 1990 onwards.
In the year 1997 the Chandris group sold the interest to Royal Caribbean of Celebrity cruises. In the year 2007-08 all the existing Celebrity Cruises were renamed with a prefix "Celebrity" before the already existing names. Celebrity Solstice was the first ship in the new class of Solstice. It was delivered on 24 October 2008 to celebrity.
