Cunard

Cunard is an American owned and British operated shipping company. Also this brand has been the fabulous operator of passenger’s liners on the North Atlantic Ocean.

A Canadian born Samuel Cunard was awarded with the first British transatlantic mail contract in 1839 and in the very next year he formed the British and North American Royal Mail Steam-Packet Company. For the next 30 years this brand holds the Blue Riband for fastest Atlantic voyage. However the Inman line and the White Star Line emerged as the rivals of Cunard in 1870s. So in order to face this challenge the firm was reorganized as the Cunard Steamship Company, Ltd in order to raise the capital in 1879.

After that one of its rivals joined the International Mercantile Marine Co in 1902. In order to compete in that tough time British Government furnished Cunard with subsidy in order to build two super liners and substantial loans. Due to the economic depression Cunard had to suspend the construction of its own new super liners. Than once again Government pursued this company to finish the construction of Queen Mary and also built the second one, Queen Elizabeth. After that Cunard merged with the White star Ltd and became Cunard White-Star Ltd. Than in 1947 Cunard purchased all its hares and revert back to its original name 3 years later. During 1968 this company withdrew from its service for almost one year in order to concentrate on cruising and summer Atlantic
Vacationers voyages.
